A lasting first impression, defined as one’s first consideration or judgement, was uniquely inscribed into the design of this significant building. Upon entering, visual ques of identity welcome global visitors to the campus.
Carson Design was provided the opportunity, in the words of the Corporation’s Founder, "Take what you find here and make it better and better." Although the intention of this statement is a bit out of context it was the definite objective for this significant building on campus.
Transforming the rectilinear brick interior into a space more conducive to the image wanted for a leading-edge pharmaceutical company was the task at hand. Clean lined simplicity, brand synergy, and an embraced welcome were key components to the building design. All guests visiting the campus do so through these front doors. First impressions are paramount, upon entry the corporate story begins to unfold. A global welcome in multiple languages is prominent with historical imagery on the periphery nodding to the substantial impact of this company. The strong horizontal lines of the building architecture were simplified and enhanced while introducing significant vertical elements for overall visual balance. The radius of terrazzo floor graphic diffuses curiosity as it leads to all the amenities located on the first floor of the building
The next evolution was the second floor of private offices which needed to be redefined. Predicting the purpose of utilization for this area hinged on a direction that was evolving at the company’s adjacent campus. Creating open collaboration spaces for informal gatherings focusing on the human aspects of the workday. The area also needed to be adaptable to support Town Halls periodically. Completely opening the entire second floor reenergized the building with natural light visible from all directions and floors. The middle area of the second floor is defined by acoustical ceiling baffles centered on the building entrance reinforcing the center spline of activity. Various seating types and heights are integrated and provide pockets for multiple group sizes.
The sawtooth configuration of the north exterior wall provided an opportunity to create five semiprivate vignettes. Each area has a focused aesthetic and provides seating and gaming options. Truly an area to decide what might provide your daily inspiration. Traversing felt screens allows for both sound and visual privacy in each area. All areas have a ribbon of windows welcoming the natural connection.
With the evident building transformation one interior space remained untouched. The auditorium was a glimpse of the past and quickly identified as an area that needed to be included as part of the redesign. Reconfiguring side walls, adding acoustical wall treatments, slip covering tops and side panels, new finishes, furniture, and branding meshed this space into belonging.
